Our club, unique in that we are specific only to kids aged 5 - 15, is organized and broken down into classes that are specific to age groups and experience. As the sanctioning body, IKF sanctions the categories, but we take it one step further in breaking down each category into experience-based sub-groups, Novice and Regular.
The CJKC has three, age-appropriate, participant classes: Kid Karts, JR-1 and JR-2.
The Kid Kart category, a spectator-favorite, is for kids aged 5 - 7 and uses Novice and Regular classes to further differentiate the broad spectrum of experience each driver may have. Novice class is typically for those 'first year' drivers, called rookies, while the regular class is for those kids who have had a years experience already. The age of the child does not dictate their novice or regular classification - only their experience. Why does the CJKC use Novice and Regular classifications? Because our foremost responsibility is safety so we separate young, inexperienced kids who may have no racing experience so that they only have to concentrate on 'seat time'.
The JR-1 category is for youngsters aged 8 through 11 and uses Novice and Regular classes as well. Novice class is reserved for any first-year driver and is irrespective of age. A drivers experience combined with input from their parent, determine the class of the driver.
JR-2 is our top-level class for kids aged 12-15. At this level, our hope is that kids have had a few years of racing experience under their belt so that they, and their parents, can move onto any other professional series and be very successful.
