2010 CJKC Mid Season Report

The 2010 IKF Region 4a Championship Series hosted by the Colorado Junior Karting Club (CJKC) hit the halfway mark of its 8 race season July 18th at Action Karting at Bandimere Speedway.  2010 has seen the CJKC experience tremendous growth in the number and quality of the racers in the series.  A commitment to cost control and parity have spurred the growth and resulted in tight finishes, quick post-race technical clearance, and good times for participants and their families.

Kid Kart

Kid Kart Novice Division - The Kid Kart Novice division has proven to be a valuable opportunity for young racers to hone their driving skills while enjoying the opportunity to compete with other drivers for podium finishes.  The class has produced some great racing as these entry level kids improve from race to race.  The first half of the season saw Tristin MacLeod dominate the initial proceedings by winning the first 3 races before moving up to the regular Kid Kart class, opening the door for another novice racer Corbin Emery to take the top honors at race 4.

A total of 6 kid kart novices experienced what it's like to finish on a CJKC podium in the first 4 races: 3 podiums - Tristan MacLeod & Corbin Emery; 2 podiums - Zebi Bleile & Justin Grote; 1 podium - Tyler Tolle & Edison Vanasse.  As the season moves into the second half, Kid Kart Novice regulars Jocelyn DesLauriers, Haydun Wimber, Zander Seigel and Tom Shefte look to move up to their first CJKC podium finishes.  The second half of the season looks bright indeed for these vastly improved racers.

. Kid Kart Division - The kid kart division has proven to be one of the most competitive classes of the CJKC with 3 different winners in the first 4 races (it would've been 4 winners if not for an unfortunate DQ in race 3).  Second year racers Liam Letzsch (2 wins, 2 podiums) and Derek DesLauriers (1 Win, 4 podiums) have renewed their battle from 2009 Rookie of The Year competition to challenge for the overall IKF Region 4A Kid Kart Championship for 2010.  Liam holds a slight edge over Derek at mid-season in the points battle, however, third year veteran Chandler Slowik (1 win, 1 podium), second year racer Cole Thompson (2 podiums), and 2010 Rookie of the year candidate Brody Shucard (1 podium) have also moved into the points chase with recent top finishes.

The kid kart division has produced some of the closest wheel to wheel racing with other racers Cameron Lazeroff, Gage Fish, Everest Fedler and Cody Dempster (2 podiums) challenging for additional podium finishes at each and every race.  The close & competitive racing environment has raised the bar for the CJKC kid kart class producing National podium finishes for Derek DesLauriers (fourth in Kid Kart Heavy) and Cody Dempster (fourth in regular Kid Kart) at the IKF Grand Nationals @ Willow Springs, CA in June as well as a National Championship (Junior 206 class) and another National podium (fourth in unrestricted class) for Derek DesLauriers at the Kid Kart Nationals in St Louis, MO on August 1st...way to go Derek!  Honorable mention goes to Liam Letzsch and Cole Thompson for battling through adversity to respectable finishes in their first Kid Kart National experience as well.  The club members look forward to more terrific racing from these young accomplished racers all the way to the Championship!

Junior 1

Junior 1 has experienced the most change of any class in the club in 2010.  In addition to the class being split into Junior 1-Novice and Junior 1-Expert groups, all Junior 1 racers now compete with the Briggs Racing LO 206 engine.  This relatively new purpose built racing engine was chosen after an exhaustive search and test program to replace the previous Comer 80 engine.  The LO 206 has proven to be an incredible choice for the series.  In 2010 Junior 1 racers have broken the track Junior 1 track records at every track so far this year.  Incredibly there have been no engine failures and no kart has left a race due to an engine related issue.  Post-race technical inspection has been improved due to the factory sealed lower end.  Jay Jacobellis, Vice-President of the CJKC had this to say about the LO 206.  "We could not be happier with our Jr 1 engines this year.  The LO 206 has fulfilled the club objective of providing equal power for all competitors at a significantly reduced cost for our families."  "By taking the engine out of the equation, we have seen several racers achieve personal bests and it is great to see our young racer smiles as they get that first podium or break into the top group."  Jay adds, "We expected the engines to be reliable, however, we have been blow away by the speed of these motors".  "We have seen our kids with the LO 206 run with and overtake very accomplished  racers running motors that cost five times as much as the 206."   Jay adds, "Overall, our parents are extremely happy with the motor and race days have been smoother and less stressful due to the reliability and equality of the engines."

Junior 1 - Novice Division- In the Junior 1 class, there are currently 17 drivers competing in the "JR-1 Novice" division.  With three different winners (Alison Cody, two time winner Evan Roshak, and Justin Bliele) in four races, this division is extremely competitive.  In fact, the "top 5" in points are only separated by 12 points:

In the second half of the season, we will be watching to see if the "podium regulars" Max and Jack will break through for their first overall wins or if Evan, proving to be the fastest overall at this point will extend his winning streak.  Many more questions remain to be answered such as:

  • Will Alison or Justin be the first to claim their second win?
  • Which of the Winter brothers, Peter or Michael, will win first?
  • Who will be the first JR-1 Novice to make the jump to JR-1?
  • Which one of the other up and coming quick drivers like Logan Howard, William Meinert, Nicole Grote, Trevor Prins, or William Sigler will earn their first podium?

This impressive group of young drivers has shown great speed, excellent sportsmanship, and tremendous competitiveness.  We are all looking forward to the second half!

Junior 1 Division-  While the engine debate has cooled, the on track racing has heated up.  Qualifying times have been separated by hundredths and even thousands of a second and three heat races have finished with multiple karts crossing the line together for position.  At the halfway mark Lucas Hannabass is sitting in 5th Place with 591 points.  Lucas has been a strong competitor in his Shockwave chassis all year and will be one of the kids to beat as we head into several high speed tracks in August.  Last year's Kid Kart Champion Blake Hannum of Kartique Racing broke out with a podium in Race #1 and followed it up with two top 5 finishes and finds himself 4th in the championship standings at 592 points. The Jake Boys Racing duo of AJ and Mario Jacobellis sit 2nd and 3rd  with 640 and 612 points respectively.  Mario started the year with 3 consecutive 4th place finished then picked it up to put his CRG on the Pole and finish 2nd in race #4.  AJ Jacobellis dominated race #2 in his CRG at Pikes Peak International Speedway in May as well as posting a 2nd in race #1 and a 3rd in Race #3.

In the top spot with 671 points is last year's Jr 1 Champion Mitchell Cody of Fear the Turtle Racing.  Mitchell and his Intrepid have compiled a near perfect season by recording three wins and a 2nd place finish in the first 4 races of 2010.  While it would be easy to look at the results and assume Mitchell has been dominant this year, nothing could be further from the truth.  Race #3 at IMI Motorsports Complex was a true barnburner with Mitchell, AJ Jacobellis, and Lucas Hannabass changing the lead at least twice every lap of the 15 lap main event.

  Junior 2

2010 also marked the debut for the Junior 2 division in the Colorado Junior Karting Club.  The club has welcomed 10 racers to this division which competes with the Briggs Racing World Formula engine.  The action has been very close on the track. Newcomer Zac Munro has been impressive in his Birel and finds himself in 5th place with 525 points.  Zac has put together finishes of 5th, 5th, and 6th after joining the series after race Race #1.  4th place is occupied by Fear the Turtle Racing's Coleton Cody with 556 points.  Despite having numerous race wins and multiple championships to his credit, Coleton struggled to get a handle on his new Maranello chassis in the first two races of the season.  Races 3 and 4 saw Coleton begin to close down on the leaders as he put together podium finishes in both races. Junior 1 graduate Evan Hannum from Kartique Racing sits in third place with 565 points.  Evan struggled early in the season but has since come on very strong and last few races highlighted by a second place finish in Race #4 which saw him run laps consistent with the race winner.  Evan impressed everyone in Race #4 and proved he would be a force in the coming races.

Two racers occupy the top spot in Junior 2 with 610 points.  Former CJKC Junior 1 and TAG Jr. champion Skyler Granger and Jr. 1 graduate Kyle Surface have been the class of the field in each race.  Kyle struck first by taking the win in Race #1 in his Maranello chassis and followed that up with a victory in Race #3.  Skyler fought back by posting an impressive wins at Pikes Peak in his Red Speed chassis and winning in a Birel chassis at Action Karting in Race #4.

The Junior 2 division is proving to be the most competitive in the club as two racers are tied at the top of the chart while two newcomers and a former champion are gaining ground to make a run in the second half of the season.
